Change Is a Space: Alchemising the In-Between

There are seasons where life stops arriving in neat categories.

Time blurs.
Space shifts.
The labels that once gave us security — relationship, home, work, money, identity, purpose — begin to loosen all at once.
I have been living inside one of those seasons.
Not quite broken.
Not quite clear.
Not quite lost.
Not quite renewed.
Somewhere in the middle.
Somewhere in the in-between.
And what I am beginning to understand is this:
Change is not only an event. Change is a space.
A space we enter before we know what the next version of life will be called.
A space that can feel suffocating and freeing at the same time.
Smothering and full of potential.
Intimidating and hopeful.
Anxious, confusing, overwhelming, reflective, empty, alive.
It is the strange place where the old descriptors no longer fit, and the new ones have not yet arrived.

The discomfort of becoming
So what is it to change?
To transition?
To transform?
Alchemy.
To alchemise is not to force positivity over pain.
It is not to pretend that the low moments are not low.
It is not to bypass the grief, the fear, the anxiety, or the mental flatline that can arrive when life is asking too much all at once.
To alchemise is to stay present long enough for something to move.
To feel and shift.
To exist and release.
To reflect and transmute.
For a long time, many of us have learned to keep going.
We hold things in.
Push things down.
Put them on the back burner until there is time.
Bury the feeling.
Ignore the signal.
Wait until life settles before we listen to what our body, heart, and energy field have been trying to say.
But eventually, the body speaks louder.
The emotions rise.
The patterns become harder to ignore.
The old way stops working.
That is not failure.
That is the beginning of change.

Why holistic well-being matters in change
The phrase Holistic Well-being took me a long time to fully 'feel'.
I trained in HoloBody Coaching and began to understand health through a broader lens — not just food, movement, or mindset, but sleep, purpose, connection, inner stillness, frequent movement, syncing with nature, nourishment, and the way all of these pieces speak to one another.
And yet, I never fully resonated with the phrase Health Coach.
Not because health does not matter. It is intrinsically essential.
But because the human experience is bigger than one label.
We are not one-dimensional beings.
We do not transform through one habit alone, one method alone, or one neatly packaged answer.
We are bodies, minds, emotions, relationships, stories, energy systems, environments, choices, beliefs, memories, breath, and becoming.
That is why Holistic Well-being feels most true for me.
It gives space for the whole person.
The tired person.
The hopeful person.
The overwhelmed person.
The capable person who suddenly cannot make one more decision without tears or shutdown.
The person who still loves life, even while moving through the ache of change.
Change asks us to participate
A life of repeating patterns and habits — some that have worked, some that have not — will eventually ask us to look honestly at what we are living.
We may feel dissatisfied.
We may feel lethargic.
We may want more than what we see when we look in the mirror.
Not because we are broken.
But because something within us is reaching for alignment.
Change is a space.
Take the time to be in it.
Feel it.
Acknowledge the lows without making them your permanent home.
Sense it.
Notice the moments of light, relief, breath, possibility, and warmth.
Alchemise it.
Recognise that the experience of both — the low and the high — is part of how we shift habits, energy, identity, and direction.
Transformation is not always loud.
Sometimes it looks like sitting at the table again after weeks of not being able to.
Sometimes it looks like typing one sentence.
Sometimes it looks like breathing fresh air and remembering, quietly, I am still here.
A Nao Wellbeing micro-practice for transiting change
When life feels in flux, we do not always need a full life plan.
Sometimes we need one honest moment with ourselves.
Micro-coaching
Ask yourself:
What part of me is trying to be named right now?
Not fixed.
Not judged.
Not rushed.
Named.
Is it grief?
Fear?
Hope?
Exhaustion?
Relief?
A desire to begin again?
Let the answer arrive without needing to turn it into action immediately.
Micro-ritual
Place one hand over your heart and one hand over your lower belly.
Take three slow breaths.
On the inhale, silently say:
I am here.
On the exhale, silently say:
I do not have to solve it all today.
Let your body feel the difference between urgency and presence.
Micro-movement
Sitting or standing, gently open your arms outward on the inhale, as though making space around your body.
On the exhale, bring your hands slowly back toward your heart.
Repeat three times.
As you open, sense what is ready to move.
As you return, sense what is ready to come home to you.
No force.
No performance.
Just breath, body, and awareness.
The holy space of change
I have been overwhelmed recently.
The kind of overwhelmed where even a decision can send the system into tears or a mental flatline.
But while I have lived the low, I have not buried myself in it.
I have glimpsed the potential.
The hopefulness.
The high.
The part of me that still wants to feel vital and alive.
I love living.
I want to be that person who wakes up happy to see the sun, the wind, the flowers, the birds — even the computer waiting on the table.
And today, after weeks and weeks of not being able to occupy this space, I am here.
Sitting.
Typing.
Breathing.
Remembering.
I am alive.
I get to breathe fresh air.

I get to watch birds be birds.
I get to listen to sadness and laughter with equal reverence, because both are signs of life.
Both are signs that something in me is changing.
That space where change is transiting can feel sacred.
To be physical.
To feel.
To experience.
To transmute.
To become.
Maybe that is what alchemy really is.
Not escaping the human experience, but learning how to meet it with enough presence that it can become something new.
