A Sense of Purpose: A Health Need


When we speak to being healthy or just feeling good or well, we always, always, go straight for diet, exercise and sleep. Which are all perfectly good contributors. How often do we hear, "Do you feel like you've added value to someone today or contributed in a meaningful way to your own life?" When was the last time you asked yourself these questions? Feeling like you’re always ‘workin’ for the man,’ ‘gotta feed the fam,’ and ‘payin’ the mortgage’ just doesn’t cut it.


If you feel like something is missing in your general well-being, not quite unhealthy but not quite feeling well, maybe that ‘something’ is feeling a sense of purpose. You go through the motions, and deep down, you know there’s more to life than what you are doing.


You are not alone! Many people go through their daily lives feeling unfulfilled, searching for something better, some real added value and meaning.


Finding your sense of purpose is a process, and it starts with self-reflection. How about some questions to start you off?


“What have I done in the past that I felt good while I was doing it? Did I feel happy and fulfilled afterwards?”


“What was I doing and came away and realised I’d completely lost track of time?”


“I’m not particularly good at much, but I am ok at doing …. (Fill in the blank)…”


“What are my natural talents and strengths?” This is NOT related to your job. Some elements MAY be relevant to your work life, but you’re trying to identify what makes you happy while you’re doing it.


These start the thought process around reflecting.  Questioning helps.


You discover a part of yourself that revitalizes your existence. It may not necessarily enhance someone else’s life, but IS IT enriching yours? This does NOT have to be a financial contribution, by the way.


Being well. Well-Being. It's a term getting a lot of air time these days and often hand in hand with that fluffy sh!t the hippy sprouts. Dig into what it means to you. It is a totally subjective phrase, yet every person breathing this gorgeous Earth’s fresh air and basking in that brilliant sunshine wants to feel good.


Don’t confuse this with feeling good about yourself - that is another aspect.
